Our Favorite People: Derek Jeter

Gay/straight, male/female, black/white, it doesn’t matter… we all have a man crush on Derek Sanderson Jeter, and well who doesn’t love DJ?

Derek Jeter plays shortstop for the New York Yankees… the NEW YORK YANKEES! Not only is he the shortstop, he is the Yankee Captain and has a slew of World Series rings, gold gloves, and other various trophy hardware that could fill any respectable athlete’s “Cribs” trophy room (right next to the Scarface poster and 80” flat screen).

Jeter is 34, single and has dated the two hottest Jessicas (Biel and Alba) on the planet… not to mention Tyra Banks, Scarlett Johansson, a handful of Miss Universes, and well Mariah Carey (even DJ makes an E-6 once and a while). He is also rich… REALLY RICH! Jeter makes 19 million dollars a year before endorsements and shills for the biggest companies on the planet including Nike, Gatorade, Gillette, and let’s never forget Skippy!

Jeter is the Yankee Captain, which in NYC means he is the prince of the big apple, the greatest city in the world. He probably never has to pay for a meal and can walk into any club with the VIP treatment, even rockin’ out his Bill Cosby circa 1985 garb that would have any of us sent to the back of the line.

When the sports press says he is on the decline, can’t play shortstop, and shouldn’t lead off… he continually proves them all wrong.

DJ can even wear a dress and a wig on SNL and we all think it’s cool. Jeter has that x-factor we all love, that regular guy quality even though we all know he is a good looking superstar millionaire.

He is the anti A-Rod.

We all love Derek Jeter.

Our Favorite People: The Watchmen

As you may have heard, WATCHMEN hit the theaters March 6th, so we at Takeoutmag are honoring them as our favorite people.

The Comedian: The Comedian, whose real name is Edward Blake, worked for the US Government as a soldier and assassin. His death at the beginning of Watchmen sets the stage for the rest of the story.

Rorschach: Born the son of a prostitute, Walter Joseph Kovacs, a.k.a. Rorschach, started off as a “good” costumed superhero but after witnessing the murder of a young girl, Rorschach changed into a vigilante. He finds himself fighting the police as much as criminals.

Nite Owl: An engineering genius, Dan Dreiberg invented his own air ship, the Owlship, and many gadgets and specialized costumes to help him fight crime with.

Silk Spectre: Laurie Juspeczyk is a second generation hero who started fighting crime as a teenager and quickly fell in love with Dr. Manhattan. Although she has no superpowers, she is very agile and athletic.

Dr. Manhattan: Dr. Manhattan got his powers while working as a government scientist. With blue skin, Dr. Manhattan a.k.a. Jonathan Osterman, is the only true superhero in the world. He feels detached from the human race and wonders if the Earth is really worth saving.

Ozymandias: A superhero and head of his own corporate empire, Adrian Veidt trained hard to become a hero and can catch bullets with his bare hands. He is the smartest man in the world, and has his own ideas on what “saving the world” means.

Our Favorite People: Andy Samberg

Our Favorite People: Andy Samberg

I’m not going to lie to you and say that I saw Hot Rod, but Andy Samberg’s SNL digital shorts are enough to earn him the Our Favorite People tag.  The now infamous video for “Dick in a Box” introduced Andy to the most of the world, and while it was funny, what Andy Samberg has produced since then shows his comedic genius and ability to do stellar impressions.

Andy is one third of The Lonely Island, a comedy group which produces dynamite sketches and songs available for download on their website.

Most recently Andy’s impression of Mark Wahlberg caught our attention as being so spot on, that if you just listen to his voice, you’d think it’s the former Funky Bunch man himself rapping with animals.  Watch and enjoy.

Andy Samberg’s ability to make us laugh outside the realm of the typical Saturday Night Live comedy and his tendency to make off color jokes involving the physical harm of other people make him one of our favorite people—and I know a bartender who looks just like him.

Our Favorite People: Kevin Smith

After the release of his latest movie, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, we felt it necessary to recognize Kevin Smith as one of our favorite people.  It’s easy (and sometimes fun) to point out his Jersey Girl shortcomings, but it’s also easy to forget what a fantastic glimpse into our teenage years Mallrats was.  Quotes from that movie still float in and out of the American lexicon, whether you like it or not.  Smith’s affinity for comic books has made them not-so-nerdy and Stan Lee’s appearance in Mallrats was the first time most people had seen the famous Spider-Man creator’s face.  Chasing Amy and Dogma were both great movies, Dogma being a favorite of many Takeout Magazine employees, and of course, Clerks, the movie that started it all.  With the release of Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Kevin Smith improves his average to .625, that’s better than Ty Cobb (without all the racist, belligerent, and violent behavior).

In addition to his impressive and fun catalog of work, Smith is an extremely likeable guy.  His commentary on the many Star Wars TV specials are always interesting, and he forced a young girl to say “aboot” when he guest starred on the Canadian television show Degrassi.  His blog, My Boring Ass Life, makes him accessible, which is a nice change from the TMZ celebrity world we’re now accustomed to.  Smith actually invited fans to kick him in the ass if they catch him eating junk food, following a post about how fat he’s become.  That’s the kind of invitation we’re into.

Zack and Miri nearly received the kiss of death before its release, flirting with an NC-17 rating.  Thankfully, the rating system came to its senses and the movie received the coveted R rating.  Unlike Dogma, Zack and Miri isn’t going to call any long standing views you’ve had into question, but it will make you laugh.

For these reasons, and many others, Kevin Smith is one of our favorite people.
